Winter Quarters

We went to Nebraska to visit my family over President's Day Weekend. While we were there I thought it would be cool to take Mike to the Winter Quarters Temple. It's a unique temple because of the struggles that the saints had as they were on their journey to Utah. They spent a long harsh winter there and 369 died, many children. There is actually a cemetery behind the temple in honor of those individuals. If any of you have ever been to Nebraska in the winter than you understand how miserable it must have been. Then add to that, they lived in small log cabins that they built with no furnace. This is also the same time that they started using the handcarts to pull their goods. Mike had the opportunity to pull one and then a rock was placed under it and he could barely get it to move. I can only imagine how difficult it was to pull those over the Rockies. What an amazing sacrifice!

Yeah, I did a three day handcart trek in Wyoming in the heat of the summer, and it changed my life and my prerspective of the pioneers.
